Joomla! is a system that has been built over many years by volunteers. The system started out as a small bit of code that has been placed online for others to download and rebuild. Other programmers and developers download it, change it and add bits to it, and then upload it back to the main site.

Over a few years and a few hundred programmers, Joomla has become one of the worlds most powerful and extreme Content Management System (CMS).

This process of uploading and downloading the source code whilst others upgrade it for free is called Open Source.

The main system is built in a what is called a modular fashion. This allows extra bits and pieces to be added into the system. These Bits and Bobs can be provided by Joomla developer directly to help upgrade the system for security etc, or they might be provided by third party companies for free or payment to change the whole way the system works.

Each one can be imported through the main system admin panel with very little knowledge of programming or code work. You simply browse for the zipped up file, select it, and then click install, and that's it, it fully configures itself automatically and puts all the right page and files in all the right places, simple as that.
