Joomla Defines the meaning of Module as

Modules extend the capabilities of Joomla! giving the software new functionality. Modules are small content items that can be displayed anywhere that your template allows it to be displayed. Modules are very easy to install in the Admin Section. Joomla! modules may include: Main Menu, Top menu, Template Chooser, Polls, Newsflash, Hit Counter, etc. Members of the Joomla! Community produce Joomla! modules on a continuous basis. They are freely available on http://developer.joomla.org for download.

The entire system is designed to allow extras to be added and bolted in to the system. This can be anything from a shopping system to a forum or chat room.

A Modules is usually the bit in the menu that allows you to interact with a component you have installed. Modules can give you a search button in the menu bar, or a new set of links that are related to the component you have installed.
