What Did We Do?

Foot Locker’s Salomon advert is 3D Gaussian Splatting almost end to end. Apart from the ultra slow motion Phantom shots, the entire scene you see is a 3D capture, shot on our 120 camera DSLR rig after a four hour setup.

We created the full 3D scene four separate times, then merged the results into one, using parts of each capture to remove unwanted elements from the others. A huge crash mat sat in parts of the setup, and a plate capture let us cut it out of the composite completely.

The scene is also two locations pretending to be one. We captured once, moved the rig 8 metres across, and shot again, joining captures taken four hours apart into a single, spatially correct 3D scene. Two pizzas and a load of cheesy chips later, the two halves line up exactly.

Common Gaussian Splatting FAQs

Can you scan people?

Yes. To scan people, dogs or anything else that moves, you need a camera rig, because it is the only way to capture every angle in the same instant without movement causing errors.

Can you scan anything?

We have not found anything we cannot scan yet.

Was anything added to the scene?

Yes. We joined two captures taken hours apart, and used a plate shot to remove a large crash mat from the final scene.
