Pepsi Max
72 perspective paintings, 20,000 photographs and three freezing weeks in Lewisham: a painted animation for Pepsi Max Cherry with artist INSA.
This one works on perspective painting, time lapse and patience. With AMV BBDO and artist INSA we shot a short film for Pepsi Max Cherry built from 72 individual paintings and over 20,000 photographs.
The set was a group of triangular columns. Stood in one of three exact spots, the flat faces of the columns line up into a single canvas, so every painting had to be done in perspective to survive the depth between front and back columns. Each one was painted, photographed, whitewashed and painted again with a slight change: 72 paintings in all, 24 takes across the three sides, building up an animation frame by frame.
Our 96 camera rig, 9 computers and about two kilometres of wiring captured roughly 200 takes as 360 degree movies, which were edited together to reveal the animation. The strange part is that in real time you could not see it at all. Until the footage was edited, nobody knew for certain it was working.
Also captured along the way: a full paint fight, some paint can flame throwing and a demonstration of the artist’s skateboard skills, all in a freezing cold studio in Hither Green over three weeks.
“Honestly, you guys were a joy to work with. You smashed it!”
Sye Allen, Director, AMV BBDO
